My Birthday FEAST...

For my birthday, my boyfriend took me to a restaurant where both of us have never dined before: Feast Restaurant near the Montrose area.  He wanted us to try something "adventurous."  I'll be honest, I was kinda iffy about this place because I was expecting a more "traditional" birthday dinner (you know, steak house or Italian), but after reading a few yelp reviews about it, I got excited.  

Let me preface about Feast.  Feast is an old-world cuisine restaurant.  It's located in a two-story house and has a "homey" feel to it inside.  Due to the casual feel of this place, one would not suspect that it's prices are at the higher-end of the spectrum.   Since we've heard about this place, we also expected it to be pricy and not casual (my boyfriend tried to wear shorts that evening and I begged him to change).  However, once we arrived at the restaurant and noticed how another guest was wearing t-shirt and shorts... you can just imagine how that comment went! 

Anyways, Feast updates their menu on a daily basis. There are two columns on the menu: the left side is their "standard" menu and the right side is their daily specials.  We mainly tried items from the left side just to see how their "normal" menu tastes like.

We ordered Chicken and Onion as our appetizer.  When it came out, it was not what we were expecting and to be honest,  I didn't know what to expect, but not this:   

It's basically fried chicken skin wrapped over a whole onion.  Sounds super unhealthy, but we all know that means YUMMY!  And it was!  The mixture of the chicken skin and onion was very tasty.  The dish was pretty greasy and I tried to eat the salad as well (to try and make it seem healthy), but the grease that rolled off from the skin made it unhealthy (but flavorful).  This is definitely an appetizer I suggest trying. We left nothing behind on this dish. 



For my entree, I tried their Crispy Roasted Pork Belly, Potato Cake and Red Cabbage with Apples.  Pork belly?? Well, it was fabulous!  Granted there was a layer of pure fat between the crispy skin and the pork, but it was still very good.  Of course, I scrapped off most of the fat, but even without most of the fat, the dish was still very delicious.  The potato cake paired well with the red cabbage and pork.  Other than the fat, I didn't leave much behind this dish either.  Even my boyfriend kept reaching over for an extra bite!

This dish sounds like a 1000 calories and it even looks like it, but its soooooo worth it!  Pork belly was not an item that I saw and said "okay done!"  I ordered it because I was told that it was the dish to try and it was!  Again, super greasy, but the restaurant is called Feast! 







My boyfriend ordered their Braised Chicken.  I actually wanted to order this dish (probably because it was the only "normal" dish there), but after our entrees came out... I was glad I didn't!  This entree is basically chicken in a pot.  It was chicken, potato, and celery cooked in chicken broth.  The red potatoes were good and the chicken was tender, but it wasn't special.  If anything, this dish was overpriced for what it was because I can make that at home!  But we tried it out and know what not to order next time we're here.  Honestly, unless you're not the adventurous type, don't order this dish (actually, don't come here at all!).


For desserts, we tried their Sticky Toffee Pudding and Strawberry Ice Cream.  I was told to try their Toffee Pudding, but that was a mistake!  It was super rich!  The cream that came on the side helped make the dish not as sweet (which was a good thing).  It was so decadent, I could not finish it!  I was actually sad about this because I was expecting it to taste heavenly.  Luckily, my boyfriend ordered the strawberry ice cream and it literally saved our dessert experience.  The ice cream was perfect!  It wasn't too sweet or creamy.  You can definitely taste that it was made fresh at the restaurant.  The only complaint I have with this dessert was how there wasn't enough!  My boyfriend and I were fighting over it!  

Overall, I really liked this place.  It's an experience that everyone should try at least once!  We are coming back here eventually to try out the rest of the menu, but probably in a few months after we burn off the 10,000 calories we ingested.  

Parking here is a hassle, you must valet.  The valet guy was kinda weird though... there were no signs or anything, but he demanded $3 from us.  Granted, we were trying to tip the guy $1 (but that was ALL we had in our wallets and it was pretty embarrassing), but I did not appreciate the guy trying to weasel out an extra $2 from us! I was about to go back to the restaurant to figure something out and the valet guy finally told us to not worry about it.  Hmmm... that made me a bit suspicious.  Aside from that incident, this place was worth trying and I had a wonderful birthday dinner.  THANK YOU SWEETIE!

The Bake Off: Cookies n Cream Brownies or Cupcakes?


My dad's side of the family loves getting together for good food.  This past get-together I decided to make something for the kids (we have a HUGE family).  Anyways, with my food-porn addiction, I came across two recipes that I've been dying to try: Cookies and Cream Brownies and Cookies and Cream Cupcakes.  Who would be the best judges on dessert!?  THE KIDS!  So... I whipped both of them up.  

Just so you know.. I took a TON of pictures while I baked my heart out (my boyfriend doesn't like sweets so I rarely get to bake).  

I know... hindsight this might not have been a fair challenge, but I have to admit it was fun and the kids really showed what they liked by leaving NOTHING behind and hiding some to take home.    

The first thing I baked was the brownies because it was the easiest thing to make.  To be honest, I was trying to make both as the same time, but I finished the brownie before the cupcake.  

I usually like to tweak recipes, but I didn't this time.  I wanted to make sure I can trust the blogger so I can have a reference for future cooking/baking ideas.


So... the Cookies n Cream Brownies: first, I crumbled a bar of Hershey's Cookies 'N Creme bar (and I pre-heated the oven to 350 degrees F).

Next, I melted 1/2 cup of butter in a sauce pan (in low heat).   After the butter was melted, I moved the sauce pan from the heat and stirred in sugar, eggs, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla.

Then, I beat in 1/3 cup of cocoa powder, 1/2 cup of flour, salt, baking powder, and the candy pieces.

After the batter was mixed, I poured it in a greased 8 x 8 square pan and baked it for 25 minutes.  If you don't want a fudge-like texture in the middle (and it is yummy and gooey), then bake it for 30
minutes.  
The recipe for the brownie:
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 1/3 cup of unsweetened cocoa powder 
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon of baking powder
  • 1 bar of Hershey's Cookies 'N Creme bar (4 oz.)

By the way... I took this recipe from someone on tastespotting.  I know... I saved it on PDF format, but I did not save the person's name ::sigh::

Okay, so the Cookies and Cream cupcakes... I first twisted off 12 Oreo cookies and made sure the side with the icing is placed on the bottom of the cupcake liner.  I saved the other half of the Oreo cookies as toppings on the cupcake.  Afterwards, I mix in butter and sugar first, then added the eggs.

In a separate bowl, I combined the rest of the dry ingredients (to be listed below).  Then I add milk and mixed the better until it was smooth.


Then I spoon the batter into the cupcake liners with the Oreo on the bottom.  Bake for about 20 minutes.  Then I mixed the Cookies and Cream Frosting while I waited for the cupcakes to cool down.




Cookies and Cream Cupcake: (makes 12 cupcakes)
  • 12 Oreo cookies
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup flour
  • 2/3 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/5 tsp baking power
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 cup milk

Almost forgot!  I preheated the over to 350 degrees and baked it in that temperature.

So onto the frosting (which was decadent!).  I grind the other half of the cookies in a food processor and set it aside afterwards.  I then mixed the butter and powdered sugar.  Added the milk and vanilla and beat until it was fluffy looking.  I then added the cookie crumbs and combined.





Ingredients for the frosting:

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup plus 2 Tbs milk
  • 2 tsp vanilla
  • 12 oreo cookie half crumbs 

The frosting was the most amazing part of the cupcake!  After I tasted it, I thought the cupcakes would be amazing! But... at the end... the brownies were the kids favorite.  Sadly, after the 10-year old took a small bite of the cupcake, she sat it down and no one else would try it.  I didn't think it would be that bad because of the frosting, but the cake mix was absolutely TERRIBLE!  I was embarrassed that it came out so badly! (and it isn't my recipe either! I actually took this off Heather Christo's blog.)

Luckily, the brownies saved me!  It was so yummy, the kids were all fighting over it!  It was such a hit, I was asked to make the brownies for my cousin's upcoming birthday.  WOWZER!   Now, all I have to do is find a better chocolate cake recipe and the cupcakes will be the next hit with the kids.
